The Attitude Advisor
Chapter 50 from “The Attitude Book” by Simon Tyler
Since the launch of “The Attitude Book” I have given many talks and facilitated many events and workshops, seeking to inspire positive change through boosting individual, team and company attitudes. The eager (and
impatient) participants sometimes implore me to give them fast track short cuts. Perhaps we all seek that quick win, the ‘secret’!
Our personal evolution and the achievement of our evolution comes through remaining committed and consistent in working many small changes. Having said that … the last chapter of The Attitude Book and one which I often refer to in conjunction with the “Board of Directors” (from “The ‘Keep It Simple’ book”) could be it! Install a deliberate pause and moment of mindfulness ahead of interactions and engagements to become more deliberate and purposeful on the attitude you wish to adopt. Turning your semi-conscious
choice into an out loud obvious one.
It is possible to turn to this chapter without reading the rest of The Attitude Book, however, the likelihood of it being your single technique to a new permanent attitude shifting state, or even getting the results that you deeply seek, is low. The more work you have done on the previous chapters, the more effective your results will be with this, the Attitude Advisor.
Picture the scene; you are just about to go into a challenging press conference to deliver a difficult message to an audience of journalists. You know that your mood, attitude and anxieties will affect your performance and alter the way in which the room receives your words. Your body is tense as you concentrate on too many things in the same moment – hopes, intentions, fears, doubts.
Your team of assistants, advisors and private secretaries gather in the waiting room to brief you and help you become calm and centred, ready to select your attitude.
“Today requires you to be humbled and concerned” they advise.
They suggest and work with you to practise and prepare that attitude; the words, the phrases, the body position; your tone; your pace’ your breathing; etc.
And slowly your mind and body align, because the selected attitude is in your range, it is not unfamiliar or false, your mood shifts, quiet inner confidence returns and with it an immense boost to your resilience, ready to face whatever the pack of news hounds throw at you.
This will actually happen every day. Consciously work with this book on a daily basis and observe the advice from your current colleagues and the (automatic) choices they make.
Work with this metaphor to be like your actual situation. Who is on your support team? If they don’t yet exist, go inside to your own reference points, take the quiet moment, listen to the sage-like advice and shift your attitude.
Note: See the Attitude Selector List to inform your attitude selection.
