Your Expectation Playlist

May 10th, 2010

In a recent coaching call I invited my client to talk to me as if from ‘the end of the week’ looking back.

Immediately she described an expected set of outcomes that she knew, in advance, that she wouldn’t feel great about. Reality was informing her range of results and feelings. But she has a choice. Today was only Tuesday, four full working days to go before that Friday report. What would she like to say? What feeling state would she want to have, given the choice? In spite of reality what might occur she began to describe a new expectation.

Does this happen to you? Of course it does, perhaps more often without you conciously realising it. You are rolling towards a set of outcomes and resulting feelings. Your mood and attitudes are pre-determined, like a DJ who has already chosen the playlist before the programme begins. Your expectation will come to pass, unless you change the playlist.

Start with thinking about your default expecation, then upgrade it (in spite of reality). Remind yourself daily and your attitude muscles will do the rest.

Good luck and keep me informed.
