It will sound obvious and you will agree, intellectually at least, but getting somewhere is simply about three things:
- Deciding where you want to go
- Realising where you are now
- Setting off
Our personal and business circumstances are often so busy; we have slipped into ‘existing mode’, where we are just getting things done, not actually moving consistently in any one direction. And we’re also pretty good at justifying the situation too. “I’ll sort it out in the next gap”; “It’ll be alright when…”; “This is my job, life is like this”.
My blog post on Saturday may also describe your current circumstance.
A corny phrase I use in many of my workshops is a great call to action; “Nothing Changes Unless Something Changes”. If you don’t take some kind of new action, you’ll be in a version of today’s mire in 2 years time.
This week I’m drawing your attention to step 1. Deciding where you want to go.
This crucial question can take time and focus to get clarity and it’s really difficult to do it alone (get a coach). The more work you put in here, the faster you will move towards your goal.
If you are going to embark on this alone, consider carving out 30 minutes this week and take yourself somewhere you won’t be disturbed. For the first 15 minutes write about what success means to you…
Examples:
- Time freedom
- Spending freedom
- Space (to live, move, write, relax)
- Flow of income
- Life is organised around you
- Hassle free
- Doing what I enjoy and am good at all the time
For the second 15 minutes relax into the chair, and let your mind go to the place you have just described, where you are enjoying all that success. As you conclude your meeting note down any additional insights you may have had, fold the paper up, file it and let go of the whole experience.
Do the exact same 1 week later, with a new sheet of paper.
And, if you’re up for it, repeat a third time a further week later. You will by now have clarity and have initiated an unstoppable wave of change-thinking that will take you to your goal.
Good luck and keep me informed.
Be simply effective this week,
Simon
