Words

August 30th, 2009

I heard once the expression that language for humans is both the greatest gift and the greatest curse and in my coaching and facilitation work I have experienced both sides of this for myself.

The words you choose (sometimes unconsciously) reflect your current thinking, but significantly affect your future thinking too, not to mention the others who are in ear-shot.

In a cyclical way your thoughts impact your emotions, which lead to the actions you take and the results you get, or the situations your find yourself in.

My message here is to make you aware that the person most influenced by your words is YOU!

What are you saying? How do you describe things?

I noticed recently that I was describing my current context as tense, overwhelming, snowed-under, messy, and disorganised. And before I knew it my thinking matched this perfectly and I didn’t feel so good, and crucially I couldn’t ‘think’ my way out of it.

I shifted my words, not being delusional or false in my upgraded descriptions but just better chosen words. I reminded myself of my abilities to work through situations, of the resources I always seem to find. And slowly my thought patterns altered. The overwhelm disappeared.

I challenge you to notice your words, do they describe the situation you want to stay in, or are they painting you in still further? You get to chose, and don’t forget who’s listening.
